I know it wasn’t the DragonCon we wanted, but it was better than nothing. And folks still brought out their cosplay game to bring us some great costumes.
Did it suck? Absolutely! I’m not just talking Covid-19 either. We lost a myth-busting legend with the death of Grant Imahara, a feminist icon in Ruth Bader Ginsberg, and the King of Wakanda himself Chadwick Boseman (Wakanda Forever!).
Here are our favorite cosplays from DragonCon 2020.
We have seen several iterations of Spiderman over the years. From the classic Spiderman, to Spider Gwen, to the Miles Morales Spiderman, this character has become one of the most diverse in comic book history. We even have a Spider-Ham, a pig that goes around in a Spidey outfit as part of Marvel’s canon. Cosplayer @naddya_michelle continues to expand that diversity with her Spiderwoman outfit.
This is usually a pretty hot division for DragonCon, but taking the Anime/Manga award this year is @yamil.xl with his Zabuza Momochi, aka Demon of the Hidden Mist, from Naruto. I’m not sure if the mist is just photoshop, but the costume is spot on!
We had to search in a galaxy far far away for this one. Straight out of the Disney Clone Wars, we have the legendary Jedi and former Padawan of Anakin Skywalker himself, Ahsoka Tano, brought to life by @vicariouscoplay.
From her humble beginnings of being locked away in a tower, this Disney Princess changed the game with creative hair accessories. Now Rapunzel is making her way into our awards thanks to @thenext.jeneration. Bonus points for including her tiny chameleon friend Pascal!
We all know and love the Black Panther, but no superhero is complete without a foe to face off against. Coming in as our winner for best Villain Cosplay is the ever fierce Killmonger. If eyes could kill, @denlemon88 would definitely be striking fear in all of you with this cosplay!
This is usually one of our toughest divisions, but @shanicespeaks ran away with the competition with her take on Alsoomese from Assassin’s Creed III. Complete with her assassin’s flag, tomahawk, and hidden blade, this was one assassin you don’t want to cross paths with.
This cosplay definitely deserves a spot in our hall of cosplay legends. Fresh from his newly acquired US citizenship, it’s Nandor the Relentless, with his ever-loyal familiar, Guillermo. This cosplay comes to us from @kameleon-cosplayfx. Great job. Please don’t hunt me down and kill me know, I did what you asked!
Our Video Game Division is a tough one, so we cheated and put this one in the “Fantasy” Division…shut up, it works. From the ever-popular Overwatch, we have Mercy brought to you by @Avera_Cosplay. She may be called Mercy, but I wouldn’t expect her to show any if you get in her way.
Cosplay has no limits. You can literally be anything you can imagine. Gender Bending characters is almost as old as cosplay itself. @lady_dovahkiin_666 carries this tradition well with Wayne from Letterkenny. And that’s whats we appreciates abouts you!
This new category is for cosplayers that create outstanding costumes based on recent movie releases. No one showed this talent more than @youneedtostrut as 53-year-old Ted Theodore Logan from Bill and Ted: Face the Music!
I would like to give a special shoutout to Nora and Jay Hixon for throwing an awesome Virtual DragonCon 2020 Zoom party. I would have given out a group award for this, but I’m the one on the bottom left in my Jonah Heston costume…so you know, it wouldn’t have really been “fair” (or so I was told).
That’s all for the Best Costumes of (virtual) DragonCon 2020. Congratulations to our winners, and keep on cosplaying no matter where you go. Please god, let us have a real DragonCon again in 2021 *fingers crossed*
Disclaimer: All our winners received unanimous decisions as “the best” in their category because we literally had 1 judge. There were no prizes, other than Eternal MyCosBuilder.com Glory. Feel free to let us know what you think of our selections and what divisions you want to see for the next MyCosBuilder DragonCon Awards!
